Saw this while lazily surfing the net.
Do you have a project that you think will do so well, if only you had the money to fund it? Then Kickstarter might just be what you’re looking for.
It’s a website that helps connect your project with people who are interested in helping fund it. It’s powered by an “all-or-nothing” funding method where projects must be fully funded before a specified time expires or no money changes hands. So say you would like to pledge USD20 on a project that has a goal of raising USD1,000, then Kickstarter will only debit everyone’s pledges once the USD1,000 goal is reached. This arrangement ensures that there is minimum risk for the “backers” of the project. The project owners can also gauge whether their projects are worth pushing thru, based on the amount of support they get.
So what do people who support the projects get?
“Project creators inspire people to open their wallets by offering smart, fun, and tangible rewards (products, benefits, and experiences).
Plus its a great story to tell your friends and the satisfaction knowing you helped a project realize its potential.
Right now, Kickstarter is focused on specific creative projects.
“A project has a clear goal, like making an album, a book, or a work of art. A project will eventually be completed, and something will be produced by it. A project is not open-ended. Starting a business, for example, does not qualify as a project.
Kickstarter can be used to fund projects from the creative fields of Art, Comics, Dance, Design, Fashion, Film, Food, Games, Music, Photography, Publishing, Technology, and Theater. We currently only support projects from these categories.”
So I had a look around the site to see the types of project that are being offered. A lot are related in movie/documentary making. But one definitely got my attention!
Meet Galileo. Your iOS in Motion.
I could definitely relate to this product. I use the Facetime feature on my iPhone with my sister and her family who lives thousands of kilometers away. If we had the Galileo, she wouldn’t even need to hold the phone anymore and I now have tilt and pan control of their phone, to follow around my sister’s daughter while she runs around the room.
So I took the plunge and became a backer!
Small pledges below USD85 dollars gets you a free t-shirt. Pledge more and you actually get at least 1 Galileo unit as a reward. The project goal is to raise USD100,000 in a month, and from the looks of it will reach that target in under 4 days!
Really looking forward to getting status updates from the project owners, which are expecting to have the rewards delivered by June, 2012.
